Abstract

In recent years, the pedestrian space in the Jalan Tunjungan Corridor has been massively developed by the Surabaya City government to fulfill the image as a street-oriented architecture. This development was carried out by changing the concept, form, and atmosphere along the corridor, which ultimately created different spaces at certain periods of time. This study explains the production of space in a historic pedestrian corridor by examining the interaction between visitor activities and government interventions through Lefebvre’s spatial triad. This research uses a case study method by mapping the behavior of visitors, daily workers and trader who carry out their activities in the pedestrian area of the Jalan Tunjungan corridor. The data obtained coupled with interviews conducted by purposive-convenience method sampling shows that there are differences in visitors' perspectives in producing space along the corridor. The visitor's preference for choosing an activity space is part of a lifestyle that makes this place a 'place for gathering' and 'communal activity'.
