Abstract

This research analyzes the evolution of Saoraja Seng in Soppeng Regency as a traditional Bugis noble residence that has assimilated colonial and contemporary elements. Notwithstanding alterations in roof design, fenestration, and structural elements, the edifice persists in embodying fundamental Bugis cultural principles through its spatial arrangement and emblematic attributes. The study employs a qualitative methodology that includes field observation, architectural documentation, interviews with local stakeholders, and historical analysis. The data were examined via visual interpretation and juxtaposed with conventional Bugis dwellings. The findings indicate that although colonial features, such the hipped roof and Malay-style windows, were included, symbolic elements—such as the employment of uneven numbers and decorative motifs—persist unchanged. The findings suggest that Saoraja Seng exemplifies a synthesis of adaptation and cultural continuity, demonstrating the endurance of Bugis vernacular architecture in the face of evolving socio-cultural circumstances.
